My 64 C10 currently has a 350 with a TH350 trans. The engine and trans were in the truck long before I bought it, and are both a little tired. The engine runs ok, but smokes a little at start up, (maybe valve seals). The trans has a worn tail shaft bearing. Previous owner tried using a driveshaft that was too short and only grabbed about an inch of the trans splines. I installed a longer yoke, seal and bushing for now, but the tail bearing is still sloppy.
Anyway, my plan is to swap the engine and trans this winter with a crate motor and rebuilt trans. I'm not looking for crazy horsepower that will require trans and rear modifications. I do need another gear, and would like to use a 4 speed trans, maybe a 700R4. I realize I'll need a new trans mount and driveshaft. The rear is original I think (probably from the stock 250 L6), and has a very low ratio. I'm thinking of getting a mild 350, reusing my Holly carb and aluminum intake, and installing headers.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
