I bought my favorite truck a 1964 Chevy C10. While in school I would dream of driving an old Chevy C10. After about a year of working that has come true.

This will be my first rebuild. The motor is a 283 and looks to be completely original from the outside. It runs a lot better than when I first got it, I drive it a lot.

I want to use good components so this truck is reliable. Thumpr cams are the only thing I have decided on.

As for other components please put suggestions. Lots of youtube videos of people changing the manifold, carb, heads, exhaust and other things. My goal with this engine rebuild is to increase reliability and make it sound good.

if you want a classic build go with the old school 30-30 grind with solid lifters. not the latest in tech but a fun cam. keep the carb around 600 cfm and add headers.
other than that an OEM HEI distributor, decent radiator, new oil and water pump. keep the manifold rise on the low side. have a standard head rebuild with new head bolts, possible a crank resize if needed. all this is of course after confirming which parts are still usable include the block. have everything checked by a qualified machinist.

I have a similar question with my '66 C10 with original 283. It runs great but uses and leaks oil. I want more reliability (not wanting to be caught with no oil) and wouldn't mind more torque. Cant decide whether to rebuild or just replace with a basic 383 stroker. Thoughts?

If you want torque, it's hard to beat the 383.
